My Story
My name is Kirby Dreher and I was born and raised in Fort St. John, British Columbia Canada. I have an older brother Shelby, my mom Cathy and my step dad Carlos. My mom encouraged me to get involved in golf at the age of 8. My brother and I enrolled in the Junior Program at the Links Golf course and picked up the game right away. We were both instantly hooked on the game. My brother and I golfed every day as much as we could. I remember my mom coming to pick us up sometimes 2 or 3 times a day and we still weren't ready to leave! Golf quickly became my sport of choice in the summer. My first competition was at the age of 12 when I won the 15 and under category at the BC Junior Provincials and the 14 and under category for Canada at the Canadian Junior. It was during this time I knew golf was going to be something special in my life.
During the winter I played hockey. I loved hockey as much as golf and I began playing hockey at the age of 4. I played on the AAA boy’s team and I also played on a girl’s team. I loved being part of team sports. I made so many friends and had such a great time and learning experience. Hockey also became an important part of my life but there came a point where I had to make a decision between golf and hockey. I chose golf. The decision was not an easy one but looking back now I am positive that I made the right choice. My parents supported my decision especially my mom - she was always worried I'd get hurt playing hockey especially against other boys’ teams when the checking became involved. To this day I still love my hockey and play whenever I can. GO CANUCKS! =)
I was recruited for golf out of high school by Coach Mike Morrow from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. The moment I met Mike I knew he would be the coach that I would play for. The four years at Kent have been the best years of my life both on and off the course. I had amazing teammates at Kent that had a big part in my maturation as a golfer. To this day we are all very good friends. I matured in many ways and it showed in my golf game and my personal life. I showed significant improvement each year. I played in every tournament. I was instrumental for the team winning 4 MAC Championships and I was named MAC golfer of the year in 2009 as well as freshman of the year in 2006. I was also named an Honorable Mention All American in 2008 and 2009. None of this would have been possible without Coach Mike Morrow and he is still the number one person I would call if there are ever any issues with my golf game!
Growing up I had had dreams and aspirations of one day becoming a professional golfer and playing on the LPGA Tour. I decided to turn professional out of university in May of 2009. I had known for awhile this would be the route I would take. One of my pivotal deciding moments to turn pro was when I played in the LPGA's Canadian Women's Open as an amateur the summer of 2008. It was one of the greatest experiences I ever had and solidified the reason for wanting to become a professional golfer.
To date, I have played in 3 full seasons on the Symetra Tour (LPGA Futures Tour) and also was a rookie on the LPGA Tour for the 2012 season. I have played in a total of 9 LPGA events so far in my career and I plan to make that many many more.
I have gone through the first ever major swing change in my life in the past few months and am extremely excited in the direction that it has taken me. I am more confident than ever in my game and in my ability to become one of the best golfers in the world. Although LPGA Q school did not go my way this year, I am ready and excited to play another full season out on the Symetra tour and play well enough to get my LPGA card for the following year!
Thanks!
