So much has happened in the past months and I’m sure if I told you everything I would write a novel so I will try to keep this short but also interesting!
Since my last blog about making it to the US Women’s Open, I played in the US Women’s Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh and I also Monday qualified for the Canadian Women’s Open in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I had an absolute blast playing in these 2 huge LPGA events and really believe that I belong out there!
I also played the rest of the Duramed Futures Tour events, I did ok but still was not satisfied with my overall result on the tour. I am extremely happy that I got the opportunity to play on the Futures Tour and it taught me so much about myself as a golfer and about what to expect in the future and also taught me a lot about myself as a person. I learned how to try and stay organized, frugal, independent, driven, and how to stay focused while on the road for 7 months straight! Living out of a suitcase isn’t the most fun part about this job but overall it was a great experience.
After the season was over, I went to LPGA Qualifying School in September. I made it to Final Stage for the 2nd year in a row and unfortunately I didn’t play my best. I ended up qualifying for the LPGA Futures Tour again which is formerly the Duramed Futures Tour for the 2011 season.
During the winter months I spent my time in Arizona working hard on my game and preparing for the upcoming season. I felt that last year my winter preparation for my rookie season could have been better and I really focused hard on improving my short game and getting comfortable in all aspects of my golf game for this season. My Rookie season on the Futures Tour really taught me a lot about what to expect and how to handle the tour and I really feel like I am 100% more prepared this year than I was last year. I was itching to get back into the competitive golf mode.
The first 2 events were in Florida and the tour began at the end of March. I started my 2011 season shooting a 1 under par 71 in my first competitive round. I was extremely happy with that. I played ok the final 2 rounds but could have been better. Overall I was happy with the first tournament of the year, it was clear to me that the work I put in during the winter had paid off!
In the 2nd event I did something I have never done in my golf career. I ended up signing a wrong score after my first round of play and got disqualified. I was very disappointed, and tried to stay positive and just work on my game for the upcoming tournament the week after in Mexico.
Mexico is one of my favorite spots I’ve ever been for a tournament and I was extremely excited to get there! I really enjoy the resort we stay at and I think the golf course (El Tigre) is beautiful and also pretty challenging. I ended up playing ok, not my greatest but decent and made the cut again and made another small cheque! I stayed an extra week in Mexico and enjoyed the beach and the sun and relaxed for what seemed to be the first time in my life!
Now I am preparing for the upcoming tournament we have in San Antonio, Texas. This is one of the nicest places we play all year. The golf course (The Dominion) is very difficult, always in great shape, and is surrounded by million dollar homes (like George Strait’s!). I am excited to get there and see where the rest of the season takes me!
Thanks so much for following my progress over the past year and once again I apologize for not updating you all more often! I am working on that!
Take Care,
Kirby
