Alright.. first blog ever here we go! (p.s. It is Midnight here in good ol' Florida and I have to be up at 3am to drive to the airport to be there at 4am to catch my flight to Mexico at 6am! Yikes, should I even attempt sleeping?!?!)
I arrived in Florida on Monday the 15th after flying all day from Vancouver, Canada. My host family met me at the airport with a sign that read "WELCOME KIRBY DREHER" which I thought was really cute. The next day I went to the golf course and practiced. I hit a lot of balls and focused on getting the feel of the greens. Wednesday I had my rookie orientation for the Futures Tour which was 4.5 hours long! Although it was long, I learned a lot of valuable information which will be helpful to me in the upcoming weeks and months on the golf course. After the orientation we had a shotgun practice round which was at 2pm. Because we started so late we didn't get to finish all 18 holes. Thursday was a 7:30am shotgun practice round and I got to play all 18 holes. After grabbing some lunch with a few friends we all headed back to the course to practice some more. Friday was the first round and I had an afternoon tee time. I slept in til 10 in the morning which was amazing but I seriously could have slept til noon if I wanted to! So the first round of the tournament did not go so well. Everything that could go wrong did, and it just seemed like nothing would go my way even when I would hit good shots(which was rare!). The next round was a little bit better, I struck the ball much better than I did in the first round and overall played better but my score didn't really improve much. I had two terrible holes(a triple and a quad!) which ruined what could have been a respectable round. After playing not so well in the first two rounds, I actually learned a lot about my game and areas in which I need to work on. I also learned that I was not mentally prepared for this tournament, my thought process was off compared to previous tournaments and my mind just wasn't in the right place. I will be working on that for the next tournament in Mexico! I am putting this tournament behind me and am extremely excited to arrive in Mexico tomorrow for my first time ever and to start preparing for the tourny which starts on Friday. When I arrive in Mexico I will be greeted by my cheering squad which will include my Mom, friend Megan, Grandma Marg and her Bf!
Just wanted to say a quick thank you to my host family Carol and Richard! They were the best host family I think a person could ask for! Hope to see you guys again!
Chiao and wish me luck in Mexico!
