So after a few fun weeks at home, I flew to Seattle and then drove to this really small town in Washington called Salem. My step dad Carlos was with me and he was my caddy while I was trying to qualify for the US Women’s Open. It was a 36 hole, one day qualifier. On the day of the 36 hole qualifier, it wasn’t very warm- only about 12 degrees Celsius or around 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and it was raining! It ended up raining for the ENTIRE 36 holes which turned out to be 9 hours straight! I ended up getting 3rd but unfortunately they only took one person from my site to the Open. I later found out that the girl that won the qualifier at my site got disqualified due to illegal grooves in her wedges so I became the first alternate! I should also mention that Carlos was a great caddy and a trooper lugging my clubs around for 9 hours straight in the rain! THANK YOU!!
After the US Women’s Open Qualifier I flew to Iowa to hang out with a couple of my friends on tour for a week before the actual Futures Tour event in Iowa. We practiced and played everyday, went boating, and had a really great time! We drove up to…. or down to (my American geography is terrible!) Cedar Rapids where the tournament was being held.
The first round of the tournament went great for me, I finally was golfing like my old self that I have been missing lately. Hitting a lot of fairways, greens, and making a lot of putts, ended up with a 1 under par 71. The 2nd round didn’t go as well, I didn’t hit the ball very good, and I bogied my last 4 holes in a row to shoot 78. I ended up making the cut, and then the final round was the absolute worst golf I could have played! Not only was a I golfing bad, but nothing went my way.. a couple of really bad lies and really bad bounces mixed in with bad golf didn’t turn out so well! Luckily I made a pay check though so that made the sting of the terrible golf go away slightly!
I stayed in housing with my friend Tracy and we ended up staying with the greatest host family in the world! We even stayed an extra day so that we could play their country club and hang out a bit more because we didn’t want to leave! So… I would like to thank the Skogmans, JoAnn, Drew, their daughter Jenn and her husband Rodger for going WAY above and beyond in their duties as a host family, and truly making us feel like we were part of their family! Thanks guys =)
Tuesday morning Tracy and I woke up super early (4:30!) to drive to the next tournament which was in Mason, Ohio. We drove the 8 hours I think and arrived at the golf course in time to play 9 holes. The next few days we just practiced and got to know the course, and my good friend and college roommate/team-mate, Maddi drove up to caddy for me.
The first round went alright. I felt like I played better than I scored but I just made a few too many bogies and shot a +2, 73. The next day when I started my round it was pouring rain and I played 1 hole and then got called in because the course was starting to flood. After a 4.5 hour delay we went back out to finish the round. Not playing that well again I shot a +3 74. I ended up missing the cut by 2 which I am pretty disappointed about. My putting was pretty good for the two days, so that is something positive that I can take away from that tourney and bring to the next one! Maddi was a great caddy by the way!
Onto the next tournament site which is in Decatur, Illinois. It was about a 5 hour drive from Mason, Ohio. Towards the last half hour of the drive while I was driving, I received a phone call from a weird number on my cell phone. I didn’t answer and they left a message. I checked the message and it was the USGA calling in regards to my alternate position for the US Women’s Open. I called them back on my friends phone and the lady told me that a spot had opened up in the Open and that I was the one who got to fill the spot! Out of all of the sites and all of the alternates somehow my site was chosen! So needless to say, Monday June 14th was one of the happiest days of my life! I can’t believe I get to play in the LPGA’s US Women’s Open which is the best women’s golf tournament in the world! Soooo excited!!!
Ok so after I had to pinch myself 10000 times to see if I was dreaming or not, Tuesday came and it was time to play our practice round. Unfortunately a huge storm came in and we only played 5 holes. Wednesday(which is today!) we were not able to play due to pro-am’s that were going on all day so I didn’t even get a full practice round in! Half of the course is under water at the moment so the tee times for the first round have been pushed back an hour and a half to try and give the course more time to dry up. Number 6- a par 5 has basically turned itself into a lake… so that is now changed to a par 3! So my estimated tee time is now 220pm with the hour and a half delay and there is chance it could be delayed even more depending on the situation in the morning! Lets hope not. Anyways, this blog has turned into a short novel so I will end it here!
Thanks to everyone for the support and I will try and write a little something once I have some down time after this tournament is over!!
